Advising

Advising provides an opportunity for students to get the information they need to make sound choices to achieve their professional goals. Advising also provides the information faculty need to assess the success of the program.

Students are required:

  1. to schedule an appointment and meet with their advisor each semester
  2. to prepare for the meeting with their advisor, students should fill out and submit the online Advisor Interview Form at least one day ahead of time
  3. print out, fill out, and bring to the meeting the Outcomes Student Self Evaluation Form
  • Meet with your advisor early in the semester to avoid the rush at registration time. You should contact your advisor by email, phone, note, etc. several days in advance to schedule an appointment.
  • Advisors
  • Freshmen and other students still in University College (UC) should schedule an appointment with their UC Advisor in Roosevelt Hall. Students who have officially transferred into the College of Engineering should contact their assigned faculty advisor to schedule an appointment using one of three contact methods: e-mail, phone (voice-mail) or a note in your advisor's faculty mailbox in Kelley Annex room A110; leave your name, student ID, email/phone number, and time slots over several days that you are available to meet. If you do not hear from your advisor within 3 working days of your request, try again using a different contact method. If a week passes by without hearing from your advisor, send an email to the department chair (boud@ele.uri.edu).

  • Capstone (ELE480) prerequisites

  • Permission numbers are issued by course instructors. They allow you to register for a particular course when you are blocked by the on-line registration system. Use the on-line permission number request form to request a permission number for a course offered by the department.

  • Program Objectives and Outcomes
  • Curricula
  • Checksheets   The Dean of Engineering keeps a checksheet that lists your graduation requirements. When you pass a course, it is checked off on your checksheet. The Dean will not approve you for graduation until your checksheet shows all requirements satisfied. Although program requirements change, your degree requirements do not change. Your checksheet is the same one you were assigned to when you entered the program, unless of course, you have petitioned to change your degree requirements to satisfy a newer curriculum.

  • Petitions   Students can petition the College of Engineering Scholastic Standing Committee to change their degree requirements. A common petition is for the substitution of a different course for a required course. While not always predictable, the response from the college is usually positive as long as the changes still satisfy ABET accreditation requirements. A petition to reduce the total number of math and science credits would violate ABET requirements and would have difficulty passing the board. If you think your educational objectives are better served by changing requirements, talk it over with your advisor and submit a petition to Dean Veyera using the petition form.

  • Degree requirements Your requirements can be found on the checksheet for your class and in the University Course Catalog for the year you entered URI.
  • College of Engineering Gen Ed requirements   The list of general education courses can be found in the course catalog of the year you joined URI (www.uri.edu/catalog/); for example: If you joined URI in Spring 2003 you follow the 2002-2003 course catalog.
