There was a communication problem between the system and the hard disk, causing faulty data reads and writes, and occasional system crashes.  This is probably due to timing issues, but could also be incorrect initialization of the IO port, an incorrectly operating bus in the ColdFire board, faulty wiring on the IDE cable connector, or a short within the Hard Disk itself.
