ALL OF THE FOLLOWING REQUIRES THE USE OF A PPP CONNECTION FROM A PC RUNNING WINDOWS-95. (Other Windows OS's with Win32s may work, but you're on your own.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Installing the X-Win32 software on your PC. Note: all files are on leviathan (ele) 1) copy "~toolan/admin/starnet/{xbase34.exe,131_128.exe}" to the directory on the PC where you want X-Win32 to reside, say "c:\xwin32". 2) run xbase34.exe; it's a self-extracting file 3) run install.exe, follow the directions. Note: if you read install.txt, the "xbase32" file is actually the "xbase34" file. 4) from the PC's X-Win32 directory, and from an MS-DOS window, execute the following: 131_128.exe -o This will set up X-Win to be a non-demo version. NOTE: our licenses are only good for the 131.128.*.* Internet domain. This includes all ELE, EGR and URIACC machines, and the dorms. There is a limit of 50 floating licenses active at any given time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Running the Mentor tools from a PC. The tools will actually be run on a remote Sun SPARCstation, but use the PC's X-Windows capabilies (installed above) to display the tools' output. The only additional thing that need be done is to copy the Mentor fonts to your PC. Do this by copying the Leviathan file: "~ftp/pub/fonts/mgc_fonts.zip" to a directory on your PC, say "c:\mgfonts", unzipping it, and then (re)moving the zip file from that directory. These fonts must then be made visible to X-Win32. Do this by executing X-Utility (via the W95 "Start/Programs" button), then going to the "Fonts/Modify FontPath" menu, and adding "c:\mgfonts" to the list. Exit X-Utility. You should now be set. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Actually running X-windows applications from the PC. 1) Login to ele (or preferably some other machine, when running the Mentor tools), and make a PPP connection. 2) At the terminal commmand line, type: setenv DISPLAY :0 If you're logging in from a URIACC modem, the IP address is: "131.128.23.*" ; "*" is assigned by URIACC when you login. If you use QVT/Net for your terminal emulator, its console window will tell you the assigned IP address when you first make the connection. Otherwise, (on leviathian) use "finger" to find out how you've logged on. The "Location" will be something like: "prov-155"; "155" is "*". 3) Run X-Win32 via "Start/Programs". 4) To test the connection quickly, run xeyes by typing in the terminal window: xeyes & Yes, eyeballs should appear on your screen, in an X-window; they will follow the mouse pointer. (If you're on a slow line, there will be a delayed reponse to the mouse movement.) 5) To run any other program, say emacs (and still use the terminal window), type: xemacs & on the terminal command line. Note: it may take some time for the program to start. In fact, xemacs is not a good one, since it takes forever for its icons to load (they're bitmaps). NOTE: The X-window(s) programs MUST be executed (invoked/started) from the SAME terminal window used to "setenv DISPLAY ..." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Good luck.
